LEGISLATIVE - The Association represents Maine's community banking industry before the Maine Legislature and our Washington delegation. Our staff provides industry representation, sponsors and supports beneficial legislation opposes legislation considered detrimental to members and concentrates on developing individual banker contacts with elected officials. Legislative Reports are distributed to member bankers updating state and federal activity of interest to the industry. At the conclusion of each state legislative session, a Legislative Recap Seminar outlines all new laws affecting the industry.

COMPLIANCE, LEGAL & REGULATORY - The website provides a "members only" section of this website where compliance officers discuss hot topics. The Association also engages in selected legal battles on behalf of members when clarification of an issue would benefit its member institutions. The Capitol Report updates members periodically on federal and state regulatory actions and impending regulations. In addition, Association staff is available answer members' regulatory and compliance questions on a daily basis.

FINANCIAL INDUSTRY NEWS - Our online newsletter The Insider addressed to member banks and affiliates recapping promotions, Maine banking news, upcoming programs and Association affairs. Our quarterly magazine, the Maine Community Banker, provides regular features on banking trends to a wide audience of directors, elected officials and industry leaders. The 1,500 circulation provides a forum for recapping industry events and feature articles.

EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS - The Association sponsors numerous one and two day seminars determined by members' needs and covering topics of current interest. Major conferences include the Annual Convention, the Community Bank Directors Forum, the Operations and Retail Banking Conference, and CEO Quarterly and Overnight Meetings. A typical year includes programs on Retirement Accounts, Compliance, Security, Flood Insurance and a host of acronym programs, such as ECOA, RESPA, USA PATRIOT ACT, BSA AND TIL.

COMMITTEES - Seven appointed committees meet regularly to discuss issues in the areas of expertise and advise the Association on needed services. Portions of committee meetings are also informal workshops with outside speakers. Each member institution and all affiliate members are invited to appoint one person to each committee, to ensure cross-fertilization of ideas and an opportunity to network with peers. Additional five information/working groups are available to all members.

Consisting of the chairs of the seven Appointed Committees, the Committee Leadership Council meets annually to advise the Association on trends and practices within various facets of bank management.

TRAINING - Certified Teller Program - Initiated in 1981, this is a statewide program offering certification to tellers who take specified courses and pass an examination administered by the Association. Savings bank, commercial bank, savings & loan, and credit union tellers are eligible for certification. While thousands have taken the course in 20 years only 1,000 have passed the rigid requirements.

Bank Security Training - Members can borrow bank security videos from the Association's film library to help in their compliance with training requirements of the Bank Protection Act.

RESEARCH - The Association publishes quarterly and year-end statistical analysis of member banks. It originated the Northern New England annual Salary Survey of executive, non officer and director compensation that is now covering 75 banks and is administered by a third party vendor. Other special surveys and statistical reports are compiled during the year.

PUBLICATIONS - The Association is the sole publisher in Maine of paperback versions of the Maine Banking Code and Maine Consumer Credit Laws. It collaborates with Thomson Financial Publishing on the annual Maine Financial Institutions Directory. The Directory is uniquely organized by municipalities and provides attorneys, accountants and many other organizations a means to locate all of Maine's financial institutions.

ASSOCIATION SERVICES, INC. (ASI) - MACB's subsidiary provides for nontraditional Association activities to members and non-members alike. ASI provides administrative and clerical support for small trade organizations such as the Maine Mortgage Bankers Association and RMA. Similar organizations needing accounting, meetings or database organization are welcome to join the growing family of ASI clients.

INSURANCE SERVICES - Employees of participating institutions are eligible for group medical, life, and long-term disability insurance plans under the Maine Financial Institutions Insurance Trust. Additional benefits such as dental and short-term disability insurance and medical and dependent care reimbursement accounts are also available. Currently 2,500 employees and their dependents receive protection under one or more of these plans. The Trust also offers group credit insurance programs to bank customers under the mortgage and consumer credit life and disability plans. Community Banks Insurance Agency (CBIA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Association, is a fully licensed insurance agency providing additional products and services to member banks.
